GDPR update #1: Your personal details on our parish list

Posted on Apr 14 , 2018 in News

Interim plans for St Paul’s parish

We want to make sure that you, our parishioners and supporters, can continue to call on the parish team for support. To do this we need your opt-in consent to keep your details on our parish contact lists. This allows us to contact you, primarily when you need our support, and also very occasionally for us to send you parish information.

We plan to compile this parish contact list by using the “Parish Census” cards that were  completed in 2017 by many parishioners for the “Our Mission Together” initiative. Obviously we would like to bring this list up to date, so if you did not complete a card or wish to update your details, please print and complete the attached form > Parish census consent card v1 and then return it to the parish office at:
St Paul’s Church
33 Bulkeley Road
Poynton
Cheshire SK12 1NR.

If you wish not to be on the parish list any longer, and do not want any support or communications from the parish, please contact the parish office so that we can remove your details from the list and destroy your parish census record card.

Progress

We are awaiting detailed specific guidance from the Diocese of Shrewsbury (who hold our data protection registration) on what our parish needs to do to achieve compliance around handling of your personal information. This guidance is expected from the Diocese at the end of April 2018, and the parish team recognises this will result in considerable effort needed to achieve compliance with the new General Data Protection Regulations that will apply from the 25th May 2018.

You will be pleased to know that our associated organisations, the St Vincent de Paul team, the Catenians, St Pauls Primary School, St Pauls Pre-School and All Hallows Academy have all received appropriate guidance, and are working on achieving their compliance.

Background

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is coming into force in the UK on the 25th May 2018, and will affect all organisations, including churches, which store personal information about individuals.

The Regulation is designed to give individuals more rights when it comes to how their information is gathered, stored and used. It will build on current Data Protection legislation to ensure that all organisations are acting transparently and fairly when it comes to personal information. The GDPR aims to ensure an individual’s right to make sure their data is held securely, correctly, and in a manner which is easily accessible and is under one of GDPR’s six lawful bases, one of which is consent.

This regulation is a new legal framework from the European Union and won’t be affected by the UK leaving the EU. There is currently a new Data Protection Bill (2017) before Parliament, which will bring the UK’s own Data Protection legislation into line with GDPR. This Bill will come into force on the same day as GDPR: the 25th of May, 2018. You can read more about the Data Protection Bill here.
