We pray for the repose of the soul of Canon Harry Stratton

Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Canon Harry Stratton who died peacefully on 6th January, at Prestbury House, Macclesfield.

The reception of Canon Harry’s body and Vigil Mass is at 6:30pm on Sunday 21st January at St Paul’s, Poynton. All are welcome. For detailed arrangements of this Vigil Mass, please click here -> Vigil Mass arrangements.

Canon Harry’s Requiem Mass is at 11:00am on Monday 22nd January at Our Lady and the Apostles, Stockport, followed by interment at Park Road Cemetery, Cheadle SK8 2AN at 1.15pm. Bishop Mark will be the principal celebrant at this Requiem Mass.

As and when further details of the Vigil Mass and the Funeral Mass arrangements are known, they will be added to this post.

A few biographical notes
Canon Harry was born on 30th January 1937 in Stockport. He was educated at Our Lady’s, Stockport and St Bede’s, Manchester (1948-53) before joining the seminary at Ushaw (1953-61).  He was ordained Priest on 4th June 1961 in Our Lady’s, Stockport. Following Ordination he went on to Cambridge University (1961-65) where he obtained a BA followed by a PGCE from the University of London (1965-66).  In 1966 he started teaching at St Augustine’s Grammar School in Wythenshawe (1966-71) during which time he obtained an MA and MIBiol.  He then attended Corpus Christi College, London (1971-72).

In 1972 he was appointed Diocesan Director for Religious Education (1972-92) and from 1977-81 was also Parish Priest of St Elizabeth’s, Peel Hall. In 1984 he was also Assistant National Religious Advisor taking on in 1988 the role of Secretary to the Department for Catholic Education & Formation of the Bishops’ Conference. From 1985-2001 he was the Diocesan Communications Director and from 1986 Editor of the Catholic Voice.

In 1992 he was appointed Parish Priest of St Alban’s, Macclesfield (1992-99) followed by St Paul’s, Poynton (1999-13). He was made a Canon in 1993, and in 1994 he was appointed Dean of St Alban’s Deanery. In 1996 he was appointed Director of the Permanent Diaconate. Canon Harry retired in 2013 living in Wythenshawe, Bowdon Vale and finally Prestbury House Care Home, Macclesfield where he died peacefully on 6th January 2018.
